The Club acquired the hire of the Barrass Stadium for matches, sharing with Old Edmontonians who had a clubhouse next to the Stadium entrance. There were turnstiles there for entry on big match and event days. Examples of this was when Edmonton FC played Enfield in FA Cup and London Senior Cup matches during the late 1960s.

The big open pitch suited Flemings free open football and the first match of the season played there was a memorable one !

FLEMING RUN RIOT ON NEW GROUND
Ambrose Fleming OB 9 East Ham United Reserves 3

Fleming celebrated their first London Spartan League game at the Barrass Stadium with a crushing victory after a 12-goal thriller, writes Doug Booth.

Fleming one of five local clubs chasing the council-owned ground at the end of last season, used the wide pitch to good advantage. With the threat of expulsion from the Spartan League hanging over them because of their previous facilities, the club managed to secure the Barrass Stadium – and on Saturdays form they should enjoy their home season.

Having collected two wins from their first three games, all away, Fleming took the field in confident mood and were 3-0 ahead after just 15 minutes. Andy Hall opened the scoring after good work by Gary Warren, and Dennis Hone hit the second two minutes later. The third came from Martin Porter – his first goal for the first team – before Alan Gregory pulled one back for the visitors. Hone scored his second after 26 minutes and a brilliant shot by player-manager Ray Gibbins made it 5-1 before half time.

The second half was ruined by East Ham’s continual barracking of the officials, especially linesman Barry Cook, who refused quite rightly to bow to their demands for offside. The main thorn in the visitors ineffective offside trap was midfield player Mickey Lynch. He continually posed problems with well-timed runs as the opposing defence pushed up. He scored the sixth goal in that manner with a 40-yard sprint to collect Gibbins’s pin-point pass. And Lynch reversed the ploy for the seventh goal, sending Gibbins through to score. Gordon Derwick made it 7-2 after Andy Press hesitated in defence for a split second.

Fleming could have been in double figures at the end of the game but left-back Len Tye hit a post with a penalty after Gibbins was bundled over in the area. Porter ran through well to collect his second goal and Harry Cox instantly replied with East Ham’s third from a free-kick. Good control by Gibbins from a Hone cross brought the ninth goal and Fleming’s highest win for several seasons.
